Timebending is an activity which involves using the Hourglass to detect and extract Mist, resources, and other treasures.
Resources are used to make refined materials, furniture, and other items through crafting. Items related to Timebending are tracked on a separate section of the Collection Menu labeled Timebending.
How to
Players must first equip the Hourglass using the Tool Wheel. Using the secondary action button, wave the Hourglass in the air to sense for hidden treasures. A directional arc of color with sand visual effects will point towards the closest hidden treasure in the Biome, Realm, or region (if on Eternity Isle). The directional arc will additionally indicate necessary elevation change, if relevant. The visual effects last for only a short period of time each time they are activated. As the Player gets closer to the hidden treasure, the color of the arc will change from white, to blue, to gold/orange. If no more resources are available in an area, the following message will display: "There is no more treasure in this area. Look elsewhere." An overlay detailing more information about Timebending displays during relevant Story quests as the player progresses. This information can be viewed again from the Game Guide after it has been viewed for the first time.

Energy Cost
- Main article: Energy
The energy cost for each wave of the Hourglass, whether Timebending normally or within an active Rift, has not yet been determined. It also has not been verified if the treasure extraction process also deducts energy, or only the activity of waving the wand.
Villager Companions
- Main article: Bonuses
When reaching level 2 Friendship with a Villager, they can be assigned a Role. Villagers who have been assigned the Timebending Role will gain additional Friendship for every treasure found. They also have a chance to drop bonus resources while they are Hanging Out with the Player. Bonus resources they produce will be dropped on the ground, and can be picked up by running over them.
Each level of Friendship of every Villager with the Timebending Role increases the likelihood that bonus resources will drop. This is applicable not only for the Villager that the Player is currently Hanging Out with, but also for all other Villagers with the same Role. When dropping additional Mist, as a baseline the Villager Companion will yield one-half of what the player extracted with their Hourglass, rather than matching the quantity.
Hanging Out with a Villager assigned to the Timebending Role while Timebending is not only effective for leveling up Friendship with these characters, but also extremely helpful for obtaining bonus materials.
Universe and Hangout Bonus
When Hanging Out with a Character, the player is more likely to find Timebending Gifts that align with that Character's Universe than other types of Gifts. These alignments are indicated on the Timebending Collection tab, as well as in the Gifts table below.
Crafting
Timebending is also a specialized type of crafting done at the Timebending Table. Interacting with this station brings up a menu with all Timebending recipes, and highlights recipes for which the materials to make are available.
After crafting a recipe it will unlock that entry in the Timebending section of the Collections window.
Royal Hourglass Upgrades
The Royal Hourglass can be upgraded using Mist at a Timebending Table to unlock additional recipes. These include new furniture, and craftable upgrades for the Royal Hourglass and other tools.
Ancient Machines
Ancient Machines are used to automate activities - gardening, foraging, and cooking - to provide a method of mass production and collection in exchange for Mist.

The Villager does not have to be assigned the Timebender Role for this Universe & Hangout Bonus to be effective. There are currently no Gifts that align with the Encanto, Monsters, Inc., Mulan, or Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Universes.
Fragments
One random Timebending Fragment of the items that have been unlocked based on the player's Hourglass Level is available each day. These items do not follow a known schedule, and the order is different for all players.

Upcycle
Upcycling a Timebending item refers to the process of converting it into a generic form of Dust (by using Dismantle), and then using Upcycle to transform the Dust into another item of the same type.
Dust
There are 4 types (colors) of Dust, one for each type of Timebending item, and each can be used as a stand-in Ingredient to complete a Timebending Crafting recipe for that item type. While at a Timebending Table, the Player's current quantities of Dust and Mist display in the upper right corner of the display.
Image | Type | Color | Item Type |
---|---|---|---|
Ancient Core Dust | Blue | Ancient Cores | |
Timebending Part Dust | Purple | Timebending Parts | |
Gifts Dust | Green | Gifts | |
Fragments Dust | Yellow | Fragments |
Dismantle
To Dismantle an item into Dust, from the Timebending Table, select Transmute, then choose the Dismantle at the top of the new panel content that appears. The Player's Inventory will be shown, where one or more items can be selected in specified quantities to convert to the applicable Dust types. The bottom of the Inventory will display how many of each Dust type will result from the Dismantle interaction. There are no sound effects when a Dismantle interaction is completed, and there is no confirmation popup.
Upcycle
It is not necessary to currently have one of the items in Inventory that you wish to convert/Upcycle Dust to - only that you have previously obtained it and it is unlocked in the Timebending Collection. (obtained either via your own Valley or via Multiplayer).
