Crystal Mystery is a Friendship Quest available from Merlin. It's available after leveling Friendship with Merlin to level 6, progressing with Donald Duck, and clearing the path to the Forest of Valor.
Quest Text
Merlin is looking for you to talk about an important topic.
He wants to investigate a strange crystal he found in the Forest of Valor. He thinks it might be connected to Donald Duck's adventures in the Dark Grove.
After examining another one of these crystals, he calls them Night Shards and asks you to look for more.
Suspecting that Night Shards are just corrupted forms of Dream Shards, he suggests you experiment with them.
You manage to purify a Night Shard.
Merlin encourages you to give the new Purified Night Shard as a gift to any Villager.

Once the requirements have been met, speak with Merlin to start this quest.

Well then, I found a strange black crystal buried in the Forest.
|

It's near the Dark Portal that Donald went through.
|
|

Most remarkably, it's imbued with magic similar to the Night Thorns.

We must investigate to learn more.

That's the spirit! Our curiosity will spur us onward!

Merlin will ask the player to bring him to the Forest of Valor.
Once there, a Mysterious Shard can be found on the ground not far from where the portal was during 
Lost in the Dark Grove, along the very southern edge of the forest. The shard will begin to sparkle while it's close.
Pick the shard up and give it to Merlin.

Ah, another of these Night Shards. Oh, but this one is bigger.

Hmm... You should search the Village for more Night Shards. I'm sure there are additional ones buried about.

Afterwards, gather 5 Night Shards and give them to Merlin.
Night Shards can be acquired by digging up the ground or clearing Night Thorns.

Try purifying these Night Shards with a Dream Shard at your Crafting Station.

Now, while you were collecting these, I further investigated the large Night Shard.
|
|
|
It reacts strongly to Dreamlight Magic. In fact, I believe it was once Dreamlight...
|
|
|
...which has somehow been corrupted and twisted by darkness.
|
|
|
We may be able to use Dreamlight to purify all of them.
|
|
|
Try combining the Night Shards with a Dream Shard at your Crafting Station.
|
|
Merlin asks for a Purified Night Shard, which can be crafted at any Crafting Station in the Potion & Enchantment section using 5 Night Shards and 1 Dream Shard.
Dream Shards can be acquired by digging up the ground, clearing Night Thorns, or as rewards from feeding Critters.
Once crafted, bring the shard back to Merlin.

The quest can be finished by presenting the Purified Night Shard as a gift to any Character in the Village by speaking with them.

- Merlin appears to repeat himself during one of the dialogues.
- The quest may not update properly if the player already has the Night Shards or retrieves them from storage. This can be fixed by dropping them on the ground and picking them back up.
